Hotels
in Thailand, even modest ones, have rooms with private services and air
conditioning or vents, a restaurant and a cafeteria. This makes it easy to find
a place to sleep even in small and secluded town.
In
the most important tourist places, especially in big cities and beach resorts,
you can find very good high-level structures, comparable to international
standards. Hotels and resorts have pools, shopping centres, saunas, tennis
courts, restaurants, night clubs e discoteques. In these hotels, the
prices are up to 7500 bath (about 200 US$). In the more modest but still
comfortable ones you can have a room for about 900 baht per person (about
25 US$).
In
Bangkok it is advisable to choose hotels located in areas where it is possible
to go walking, to avoid long tranfers. A nice area is the one around Khao
San Road, close to the Royal Palace, where the travellers "on the
road" can find many small hotels and guest houses. For those looking for a
luxury accommodation, the mythical Oriental Hotel (48 Oriental Avenue, New Road,
0066.2.2360.400), on the Chao Phraya River would be the most suitable. The hotel
has been declared "best hotel in the world" 11 times.
It
is often possible to be hosted at the buddhist monasteries, which welcome almost
exclusively male
travellers. The travellers sleep on a rush mat in the "sala" (the big
room in the middle of the monastery) or in the small wooden houses where the
young monks live. From March to June, during the school holidays period, it is
possible to stay at the university campus and colleges. They are very cheap and
comfortable like the Ymca, Ywca and the Youth Hostels.
